Célibataire, droitier, mesurant 1 mètre 83, il a une sœur cadette prénommée Ruta qui fut elle aussi une joueuse de tennis.
Ce joueur américain fait partie d'une génération riche de grandes personnalités qui ont marqué cette période du début des années 1980 où le tennis est devenu un sport très médiatique. Si bien que les duels souvent très accrochés qui l'ont opposé à des légendes - Björn Borg, Guillermo Vilas, Jimmy Connors et John McEnroe - sont désormais inscrits dans l'histoire de ce sport.
