Artiste et Imprimeur ( Allemand) Né en 1400 (approximativement)Décédé le 03 février 1468 (à l'âge d'environ 68 ans) «Jean ou Hans (Henn, Henchin, Hengin) Gensfleisch, dit Gutenberg, naquit à Mayence, à une date qu'on ne connaît pas, mais qui doit être très voisine de 1400. Il était le fils de Friele Gensfleisch et de Else (diminutif d'Elise) de Gutenberg. On ne sait pas pourquoi le nom de Gutenberg lui a été donné de préférence à celui de Gensfleisch. Ce serait, d'après A. Bernard, à cause d'une maison sise à Mayence et ainsi appelée que sa mère avait reçue en dot. On n'a aucun renseignement ni sur ses premières années, ni sur son éducation. En 1420, il se vit forcé d'émigrer, à la suite de troubles dont le parti populaire sortit vainqueur. Gutenberg appartenait, en effet, à une famille patricienne. On suppose qu'il se retira à Strasbourg, mais on n'en a pas la preuve.
