Actrice et Artiste ( Américaine) Holly Hunter, de son vrai nom Helen Elizabeth Hunt, est née le 20 mars 1958 à Conyers en Georgie. Son père est fermier et, pour compléter ses revenus, a dû accepter un poste de représentant à mi-temps, pour une compagnie. Elle est la plus jeune d'une famille de sept enfants.
Elle découvre très jeune sa vocation. Soutenue par ses parents, elle présente des spectacles et fait partie d'une troupe de théâtre à Atlanta. Elle prend des cours d'art dramatique à la Carnegie-Mellon University.
Elle fait ses débuts au théâtre en 1982 à Broadway, dans une pièce de Beth Henley, Crimes du cœur. Elle jouera par la suite cinq de ses autres pièces. La même année, elle quitte New York pour Los Angeles afin de tenter sa chance au cinéma.
