Il a commencé de se produire sur scène au sein d'une famille de musiciens et de chanteurs. Il vole de ses propres ailes dès 1957 grâce à une reprise de Fats Domino : I'm Walkin. Il s'est longtemps posé en concurrent d'Elvis Presley, séduisant l'Amérique blanche et bourgeoise. Sa carrière a duré longtemps comparée a celle des idoles de son époque.
Il s'est essayé également au cinéma en apparaissant dans quelques films dont le célèbre Rio Bravo de Howard Hawks aux côtés de John Wayne et Dean Martin.
Disques et compilations continuent à être réédités régulièrement, tels, en 2002, l'album Teenage Idol, homonyme de sa chanson fétiche ; en 1987, il avait été élu au Rockabilly Hall of Fame, deux ans après son accide...
