Elle est surtout connue pour les personnages qu’elle incarne dans deux des séries les plus populaires de l’histoire de la télévision américaine : l’inspecteur Carolyn Barek dans New York, section criminelle (Law & Order: Criminal Intent) (2001) et surtout Gloria Trillo, dans Les Soprano (The Sopranos) (1999) face au titan James Gandolfini.
Elle fait ses débuts au cinéma dans True Love (1989) de Nancy Savocca, qui lui vaut le Prix de la Meilleure Actrice à l’Independent Spirit Award. Deux films, cependant, vont asseoir sa réputation : Jungle Fever (1991) de Spike Lee, où elle vit une histoire d’amour torride et inter-raciale avec Wesley Snipes, et La Main sur le berceau (The Hand That Rocks the Cradle) (1992) de Curtis Hanson, qui la voit confrontée avec Rebecca de Mornay en baby-sitter infernale.
