Alhazen est né en 980, dans la ville de Bassora dans l’actuel Iraq où il reçut son éducation qu’il compléta cependant dans la ville de Bagdad. À l’époque, Bassora était sous le contrôle de la dynastie des Buwayhides qui régnèrent sur la Perse à cette époque. C’est pourquoi il est parfois mentionné sous le nom d’al-Basri. Bien que la question ne soit pas acceptée par tous, la plupart des gens s’entendent pour dire qu’il est décédé au Caire en Égypte en 1040.
Alhazen commença sa carrière de scientifique dans sa ville natale de Bassora. Il fut cependant convoqué par le calife Hakim qui voulait régulariser les inondations du Nil qui frappait l’Égypte années après années.
