Bela Lugosi quitta la Hongrie en 1919, puis se rendit aux États-Unis deux ans plus tard. C’est là-bas (après quelques années difficiles à cause de son manque de connaissances de l'anglais) qu'il jouera des centaines de fois Dracula dans la pièce de théâtre tirée du roman de Bram Stoker. Son accent hongrois contribua grandement à son jeu d'acteur. Célèbre acteur de films fantastiques américains, c'est le rôle de Dracula chez Universal Pictures qui le fit connaître.
