John (Toland) Dillinger, né le 22 juin 1903, décédé le 22 juillet 1934, était un célèbre gangster et braqueur de banques américain pendant la grande dépression.
Natif d'Indianapolis, il devient chef de bande et commet des vols à travers l'Indiana et l'Illinois. Il est fils de propriétaires agricoles et donc a l'abri du besoin.
Mais John Dillinger a le grand banditisme dans le sang.
Capturé en Arizona et ramené à la prison de Crown Point, il s'évade de prison dans la voiture du shérif et devient l'ennemi public numéro un selon le FBI.
Le caractère légendaire de ses actes criminels fait de lui un véritable mythe américain, que la légende populaire assimile à Robin des Bois.
