Layne Thomas Staley (22 août 1967 - 5 avril 2002), né à Kirkland, Washington, USA, était le chanteur du groupe grunge/metal de Seattle, Alice in Chains, ainsi que du groupe Mad Season.
À l'âge de 12 ans, Staley apprend la batterie et joue dans plusieurs groupes glams, mais aspire à être chanteur. Il troqua alors sa batterie pour un micro. Il rencontra Jerry Cantrell en 1987, et forma Alice In Chains. Glam à l'origine, Alice In Chains vira au grunge/metal. Au début des années 90, Alice In Chains devint un des groupes phares de la scène grunge de Seattle avec Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam et Mudhoney.
Facelift, leur premier album, sort en 1990. Il rencontrera un certain succès grâce notamment aux hits Man in the box et We die young. C'est à partir de là que Staley devint accro à l'héroïne.
