Mark David Chapman (né le 10 mai 1955), Américain originaire du Texas, a assassiné John Lennon le soir du 8 décembre 1980 à New York. Lennon s'est écroulé devant sa résidence, au coin de la 72e rue, Central Park à Manhattan.
Plus tôt dans la journée, Chapman avait serré la main de Lennon pour lui demander un autographe. Chapman l'a attendu près de son domicile et a tiré à cinq reprises sur le chanteur, le manquant une fois mais provoquant quatre blessures mortelles. Chapman avait acheté le calibre 38 à cinq coups à Honolulu le 27 octobre 1980. Il a avoué avoir voulu tuer Lennon lors d'un précédent voyage à New York mais n'avait pas eu le courage pour passer à l'acte.
