Marcus Mosiah Garvey (17 août 1887, Saint Ann's Bay, Jamaïque-10 juin 1940, Londres) est un leader noir du XXe siècle et est considéré comme un prophète par les adeptes du mouvement rastafari d’où son surnom Marcus « Moses » Garvey ou « The Black Moses », Moses se traduisant par Moïse en français.
Précurseur du panafricanisme, il se fait le chantre de l’union des noirs du monde entier à travers son journal The Negro World et le promoteur obstiné du retour des descendants des esclaves noirs vers l’Afrique (ce qu'on appelle le "Back to Africa").
Né en Jamaïque en 1887, un an après l'abolition de l'esclavage à Cuba, dans l'île opprimée, où la ségrégation raciale (apartheid) règne ; les conditions de travail n'ont pas vraiment changé depuis l'abolition de l'esclavage.
