Martin Bormann est né le 17 juin 1900 à Halberstadt, dans le Mecklembourg, au sein d'une famille modeste. Il est brièvement engagé dans l'artillerie durant la première guerre mondiale, avant de rejoindre des mouvements d'extrême droite après la guerre. Il devient membre du NSDAP, le parti nazi, en 1925.
Entre 1928 et 1930, il est membre des SA. Gravissant les échelons du parti, Bormann est élu au Reichstag en 1933. De juillet 1933 jusqu'en 1941, il est chef du cabinet de Rudolf Hess. Après le fuite de celui-ci vers la Grande-Bretagne, Bormann est désigné chef de la Chancellerie du Parti, en mai 1941. En avril 1943, il devient le secrétaire de Hitler. Homme de l'ombre et plus proche collaborateur du Führer, Martin Bormann exerce un énorme pouvoir, qui fait de lui le n° 2 du régime finissant.
