Né en 1973 à Salt Lane en Jamaïque, Buju Banton, de son vrai nom Mark Myrie, représente à ses débuts ce que beaucoup déteste dans le ragga. Avec des paroles sexuellement explicites, il semble encourager le nihilisme et la violence. Agé de 19 ans, il connaît le succès en Jamaïque avec les singles Bogle et Love me browning / Love black woman accompagnés de son premier album Stamina Daddy. Il provoque une controverse internationale avec le morceau Boom boom bye bye qui appelle à la mort des homosexuels de Jamaïque. L'artiste ne s'excuse pas du fait de ses convictions religieuses. Petit à petit, Buju Banton développe une musique plus axée sur l'amour et le social. Il apporte son soutien au Project Willy qui aide les enfants atteints du SIDA.
