Dorothea Tanning (née le 25 août 1910 et morte le 31 janvier 2012 à 101 ans) est un peintre américain, éditeur, sculpteur et écrivain. Elle a aussi confectionné des décors et des costumes pour des ballets et des spectacles.
Dorothea Tanning est née à Galesburg (Illinois) le 25 août 1910, dans une famille d'origine suédoise. Passionnée par le dessin, elle suit des études d'art et quitte sa famille en 1930 pour suivre un temps les cours de l’académie of Arts Institutes de Chicago. Puis elle s'installe à New York où elle exerce le métier de dessinatrice publicitaire.
En 1936, elle visite la grande exposition « Fantastic-art, Dada, surrealism », ce qui marquera ses choix artistiques futurs. En 1942, elle se joint au groupe surréaliste de New York sous la direction d'André Breton.
