Anastacia grandit à New York dans un environnement meublé de musique alors que son père est chanteur et que sa mère est comédienne dans des comédies musicales de Broadway. Malgré qu’on lui diagnostique la maladie de Chron à l’âge de 13 ans, elle devient danseuse et on peut la voir dans l’émission « Club MTV » de même que dans les clips « Everybody Get Up » et « Twist and Shout » de Salt-N-Pepa.
En 1999, elle atteint la finale de l’émission « The Cut » de MTV qui recherche de nouveaux talents. Elle attire ainsi l’attention des compagnies de disques et s’entend avec Daylight, une filiale de Sony et Epic. En 200, elle lance l’album « Not That Kind ».
