Josef Škvorecký est un écrivain de langue tchèque (bien qu'ayant également écrit en anglais), né en 1924 à Náchod en Tchécoslovaquie (aujourd'hui République tchèque) et mort le 3 janvier 2012 à Toronto. Il vivait depuis 1968 au Canada.
Josef Škvorecký fait ses études secondaires dans sa ville natale située au nord-est de Prague, à la frontière avec la Pologne. Il y sera marqué par l'occupation allemande et par sa passion pour le jazz, deux thèmes récurrents dans son œuvre. À la fin de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, Škvorecký poursuit des études de médecine puis de philosophie à l'université Charles de Prague, travaille dans une maison d'édition, puis rentre en 1956, comme rédacteur, à la revue Littérature mondiale.
