Physicien et Scientifique ( Anglais) Né le 24 décembre 1818Décédé le 11 octobre 1889 (à l'âge de 70 ans) James Prescott Joule naquit à Salford, près de Manchester, il était le deuxième des cinq enfants d’un brasseur fortuné. Grâce à son père d’abord, puis, à partir de janvier 1842, par son affiliation à la Manchester Literatury and Philosophical society, il put pleinement participer à l’intense vie intellectuelle de la cité. La fréquentation des ingénieurs et des techniciens nombreux à Manchester, marqua par-dessus tous ses débuts, et l’on conçoit que le truchement des problèmes techniques l’amena à formuler sa version du principe de la conservation de l’énergie au début des années 1840.
En dépit de la réputation internationale dont il jouit à partir de 1850 environ, Joule se confina sa vie entière dans une sorte de bien qu’il en devînt l’un des membres (fellow) en 1849; il n’occupa ni chaire universitaire ni aucune position scientifique rémunérée, demeurant dans la région de Manchester...
