Herman Leonard (6 Mars 1923 à Allentown, en Pennsylvanie [1] - 17 août 2010 à Los Angeles, Californie) était un photographe américain connu pour ses images uniques des icônes du jazz. Leonard est titulaire d'un baccalauréat en photographie en 1947 de l'Ohio University, bien que sa carrière universitaire a été interrompue par une période de service dans l'armée américaine pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Dans l'armée il a servi comme technicien médical en Birmanie, tandis que ci-joint aux troupes chinoises de Chiang Kai Shek de lutte contre les Japonais.
Ses parents, Joseph Leonard, Rose et Morrison étaient des immigrants roumains, qui a émigré de Yassi, la Roumanie aux États-Unis. [2] [3]
