Mort Shuman est né le 12 novembre 1936 à New York. Acteur, mais surtout compositeur de renom, il a écrit quelques standards de la pop comme Save the Last Dance for Me ou Teenager in Love. Il commence à écrire des chansons à 18 ans et c'est pour Elvis Presley qu'il composa le titre Surrender. En 1958, il s'associe au chanteur Doc Pomus, avec qui il formera un duo mythique de compostion/intérpretation. C'est dans les années 60 que Mort Shuman connaît l'apogée de son succès. Il écrit entre autres pour Janis Joplin, Andy Williams et The Small Faces. En 1966, alors qu'il tombe sur Jacques Brel, Mort Shuman décide de venir vivre en France. Il commence alors à traduire certains textes de Brel en anglais, ce qui le fait connaître en France.
