Matthew Shepard (né le 1er décembre 1976 à Casper au Wyoming aux États-Unis d'Amérique, mort le 12 octobre 1998 à Fort Collins au Colorado aux États-Unis d'Amérique) était étudiant à l’université du Wyoming quand il a été assassiné par deux jeunes gens, à l’âge de 21 ans, parce qu’il était homosexuel.
Le 6 octobre 1998, Matthew Shepard sort avec des amis homosexuels au Fireside Bar à Laramie, Wyoming. Il discute avec eux, puis ceux-ci s’en vont. Resté seul, Matthew se fait aborder par deux jeunes gens qui lui demandent s’il est homosexuel. Ayant répondu par l’affirmative, il se voit proposer un tour de voiture, qu’il accepte volontiers.
Mais les jeunes gens emmènent Matthew en dehors de la ville et le font sortir à coup de crosse de Magnum .357. L’ayant attaché à une barrière, ses agresseurs le frappent jusqu’à lui briser le crâne, puis, le croyant mort, l’abandonnent.
