Robert James Fischer dit Bobby Fischer, né le 9 mars 1943 à Chicago, est un joueur d'échecs américain, champion du monde de 1972 à 1975 ; il est devenu Islandais en 2005. Il a été aussi la bête noire des organisateurs de tournois, du fait de ses exigences (salle, mobilier, lumière, etc.). Il est mort le 18 janvier 2008.
Son père, Gerhardt Fischer, biophysicien allemand, divorce de sa mère Regina, américaine, en 1945. C'est sa mère qui s'occupe de son éducation et de celle de sa sœur Joan, son aînée de six ans. Bobby ne verra plus son père. Regina et ses deux enfants déménagent pour Mobile dans l'Arizona, puis s'installent deux ans plus tard à Brooklyn.
